A practical, local's-eye look at East Hill: where it is, how it came to be, and what living here is really like.

Where East Hill is

East Hill rises from the edge of downtown Vernon toward the South BX. Most locals put its western edge at Pleasant Valley Road and 27th Street, its southern edge near Highway 6 (Coldstream Avenue) and 30th Avenue, and its northern reach around 43rd Avenue. To the east it rolls toward the BX farmland and the Coldstream boundary. Vernon Secondary School sits near the middle, and the Crescents crown the top of the hill.

Neighbourhood lines are informal. If you're unsure whether a street "counts", ask Sarah or Sean.

A short history

East Hill was Vernon's first prestige neighbourhood. In the 1890s, the town's merchants, professionals and future mayors built side by side along Pleasant Valley Road. Four of those Victorian-era homes still stand near the 35th Avenue roundabout. One, built in 1895, is now the Caetani Cultural Centre. Another, from 1893, was built by W.R. Megaw, who became mayor in 1899.

Everyday life

• Downtown on foot: restaurants, coffee, the library and the Performing Arts Centre are all a short walk down the hill.
• Parks: Lakeview Park has ball diamonds, a playground and the revitalized Peanut Pool and spray park, which reopened in June 2024 with free admission.
• Arts: the Caetani Cultural Centre runs exhibitions and residencies in a restored 1895 home.
• Health care: Vernon Jubilee Hospital is just down the hill.
• Weekends: Kalamalka Lake is about 10–15 minutes away, and SilverStar Mountain Resort is about 30.

Schools

East Hill is in School District No. 22 (Vernon). Hillview Elementary serves much of the area, with Silver Star Elementary and École Beairsto (French Immersion) nearby, and Vernon Secondary School right in the neighbourhood. Catchments change, so always confirm the school for a specific address with SD22.
